The future is here, in the form of web browser based synths! Imagine being able to load up any famous synthesiser brand in your browser and then output audio to your DAW of choice. This may not be many years away, and it offers attractive possibilities to consumers and publishers alike. (Subscription based synths, anyone?) Other creative industries have already moved in this direction (see Adobe Creative Cloud) and this type of service can also prevent software piracy, making it an attractive option for the big brands. There are a few big obstacles to overcome, such as latency, processing load and stability, but it might not be too long until the dream of a web based DAW and synths becomes a reality.
